Oppo Neo 5 Review

Oppo, a value-minded smartphone brand, made a strong debut in India and competed with established brands such as Samsung and Sony. However, with new launches from smaller Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Coolpad, Oppo’s market share has decreased. The Indian smartphone market now offers remarkable devices for less than Rs. 10,000, which is a significant decrease from the past.

Oppo’s latest launch is the Oppo Neo 5 (2015), priced at Rs. 9,990. The phone has to compete with capable budget devices priced significantly lower than it, at Rs. 5,999 or even less.

The Oppo Neo 5 (2015) features a flat front and back with a metallic band around the sides, which is a common design formula used by multiple companies. The phone is tall and narrow, with a lot of white space above and below the screen and relatively thin borders on the sides. The phone’s speaker grille on the lower rear is the only unique design element.

The phone’s power button is on the left and the volume rocker on the right. It has only a 3.5mm audio jack on top and a Micro-USB port and a mic hole on the bottom. The rear panel is removable, but the battery is sealed in, and it has one Micro-SIM slot, one Nano-SIM slot, and a microSD slot.

The phone’s construction quality and bundled accessories are good, but its hard edges are uncomfortable for prolonged use. The phone’s top edge is also scratchy against the ears.

The Oppo Neo 5 (2015) is a budget phone priced at Rs. 9,990, which faces tough competition from other budget devices that are available in the market for much less. The phone’s design is unoriginal and lacks personality. It has a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 480×854, which is quite low compared to other phones in its price range. The phone is powered by a MediaTek MT6582 processor, 1GB of RAM, and has 8GB of storage which can be expanded up to 32GB using a microSD card.

The Oppo Neo 5 (2015) also lacks 4G connectivity, which is now considered a standard feature in budget phones. The phone’s camera is limited to 720p video recording, and the secondary camera has a resolution of just 2 megapixels. The phone runs on Oppo’s custom skin called Color OS, which is based on Android 4.4.2. The skin allows for some cosmetic control over the interface and includes features such as a Security Centre app, Guest Mode, and Permission Monitor.

Overall, the Oppo Neo 5 (2015) seems outdated compared to other phones in the market today. The phone’s spec sheet reads like one from a year or more ago, and it almost feels like the company is trying to sell off old stock. While Oppo points to the camera quality and other intangible features, it’s hard to justify the price of this phone when there are much better options available for less.

During the benchmarking phase of the Oppo Neo 5 (2015) review, the phone was found to be struggling with heavy games and apps, while doing okay with day-to-day usage. The low-resolution screen resulted in terrible graphics scores, with the phone only able to push out 9.6fps in GFXbench. The scores in 3DMark Ice Storm and Ice Storm Extreme were well below current averages at 3,228 and 2,090 respectively. AnTuTu and Quadrant’s scores came in at 18,703 and 7,269 respectively. This means that if you like bouncing between lots of apps and browser tabs, you might run into bottlenecks that other phones in the market today do not face.
